“This year’s trials and selection for the team was by far the most challenging all coaches have been involved with. The selection process put athletes through both training sessions and then gave them the chance to play against rival states at the East Coast Challenge. It was a truly arduous process; all athletes should be commended for their commitment and efforts throughout. Myself, Tim and Renae have selected a group we believe has exceptional talent, work ethic and the potential to achieve great things in Geelong at the Under 18 National Championships for 2018”. – Alek Horenko (U18 Metro Women Head Coach)

“I’m really honoured to be coaching the metro team this year. With a deep pool of talent, the selection process was tough. A medal placing is within reach with preparation and commitment for everyone involved” – Jacob Jackomas (U18 Metro Men Head Coach)

Nathan Kirwan the Manager of High Performance for Basketball NSW added “I’m really excited to see these two groups progress through their final preparations and into the tournament at Nationals.

The Metro Women will be looking to replicate the success of two years ago where they won a silver medal in the U/16s and hopefully go one place better! There is consistency with the Head Coach in Alek and the group have a great rapport with one another, so we are hoping for a great tournament from them.

The Metro Men also have some familiarity within the group with Jacob again Head Coaching them. They were a little unlucky in some of their early pool games two years ago and played catch up from then on. The group has improved dramatically over the last two years so I know that Jacob will have the team ready to compete with the best teams and have a successful tournament.”

The 2018 Australian U18 Championships will be hosted by Basketball Geelong from the 21-28 April 2018.
