NSW Country Basketball has been conducting the U12 Basketball Jamboree for 15 Years now with the first Jamboree taking place in Terrigal NSW in 2001, the event alternated from coast to inland over a period of years with Bathurst, Griffith, Shoalhaven and Port Macquarie hosting the event before it was decided that Port Macquarie would be the home of the Jamboree from 2005 to 2014. In 2015 it was decided to move the Jamboree and take it inland again of which Tamworth has been the host for the past two years. Each year 180 players and 40 coaches and managers attend the Jamboree it is the platform for the future of our players and volunteers.
The Jamboree has been developed to provide Junior Basketballers with an enjoyable basketball experience that includes more than just direct head to head competition. The Jamboree concept includes social activities, coaching clinics and games. The focus is not on winning – it is participation and enjoyment of the game that is important at the Jamboree. The games have specially designed rules that cater for the involvement of all players.
Over 400 U12 players both boys and girls attended the Skills Days that were held in 11 Regional centres across the state. (Merimbula, Moss Vale, Albury, Bathurst, Griffith, Queanbeyan, Terrigal, Tamworth, Port Macquarie, Byron Bay and Newcastle from here 180 players (90 boys and 90 Girls) were selected to attend the NSW Country Jamboree that was held in Tamworth from Saturday 24th to Tuesday 27th September. The Players are placed in teams not on ability but on heights and where their home association is, as the concept is about participation and just having fun not winning!
The Jamboree not only offers development for the players and coaches but it also gives an opportunity for 20 Referees through a scholarship to attend the Jamboree to get expert coaching and development from regional referee coaches. The referees are much like the players they come from Regional basketball associations as far as Albury in the South and Lismore in the North and are involved in all aspects of the event it is a great opportunity for these young officials to learn about officiating without all the extra pressures from the sidelines.
The Jamboree is a great initiative that sets the path for everyone involved its developing the future of our wonderful game of basketball.
