Why become a Coach?
There are lots of reasons why people get involved in coaching.
As a basketball coach, you will often form the first lasting impression that participants and their families have with our game.
Basketball throughout Australia relies on dedicated volunteers to teach people how to play the game and compete. We recognise there is a need to support these volunteers with high quality, consistent, accessible training. This is fundamental to the development of players, coaches, pathways in sport and of the game in Australia.
Whether you are coaching a team of beginners who are just learning to love the sport or a national team, we hope you enjoy coaching Everyone’s Game.
(Previously Club Coach / Level 1)
The Competition Coach pathway is designed for coaches working in junior and senior club competitions, including domestic and local competitive environments.
This pathway represents the most common entry point into the Coach Development Framework for coaches who are actively involved in competition basketball and want to develop their coaching capability over time.
The focus of Competition Coach learning is to help coaches develop and perform, with emphasis on:
Teaching and refining individual skills
Introducing and applying offensive and defensive team concepts
Communicating effectively with youth and adult athletes
Designing and delivering engaging, safe, and effective training sessions
All coaches entering the new framework in this pathway commence at Competition Bronze, where existing Club Coaches have been automatically recognised.
Progression within the Competition pathway occurs horizontally (Bronze → Silver → Gold) through the accumulation of Coach Development Points, earned via:
Actively coaching
Online learning modules
Face-to-face learning opportunities
Coach-driven and applied learning activities
There is no fixed time requirement to progress; advancement is based on engagement and development rather than attendance alone.
(Previously Association Coach / Level 2)
The Representative Coach pathway supports coaches working in representative programs and higher-performance environments, including association and pathway-level teams.
This pathway focuses on helping coaches perform and excel, with learning experiences that may include:
Advanced offensive and defensive concepts
Athlete preparation, recovery, and wellbeing
Strength and conditioning principles
Game analysis, scouting, and competition preparation
Leadership and decision-making in performance environments
All existing Association Coaches have been transitioned into Representative Bronze under the new framework.
Like the Competition pathway, progression occurs through Bronze, Silver, and Gold, with coaches earning Coach Development Points through a combination of:
Coaching activity
Face-to-face and applied learning
Online modules
Mentoring and coach-led development
Movement into the Representative pathway recognises where and how a coach is coaching, not just how long they have been accredited.
The Performance Coach pathway is intended for coaches operating in elite, high-performance, and national pathway environments.
This pathway is internationally aligned and FIBA-recognised, with delivery and progression managed by Basketball Australia to ensure best-practice learning experiences.
Entry into this pathway is based on:
Coaching role and environment
Demonstrated experience and capability
Endorsement through appropriate high-performance channels
The Master Coach designation recognises coaches who have demonstrated sustained excellence in elite and high-performance environments over an extended period.
This recognition is:
Internationally aligned
FIBA-recognised
Awarded at the discretion of Basketball Australia
