Basketball NSW proudly launched the Infrastructure Strategy and Facility Plan at the Basketball NSW State Conference on 29 November 2025. This plan sets a clear direction for how we will work with government, partners, and local associations to improve access to safe, modern and affordable places to play across New South Wales.
The Infrastructure Strategy outlines the challenges we face today. Court access continues to be the number one barrier to participation, with restricted availability limiting growth in competitions, community programs, and pathway opportunities. Many associations are forced to compress game times, increase team sizes, and turn away thousands of potential players each year due to limited court capacity.
Our plan responds to these challenges with a long-term approach built around three priorities:
1. Improving access to existing courts
We will work with schools, councils, and venue operators to maximise the use of underutilised spaces, upgrade ageing facilities, and support associations to secure stronger, more reliable access arrangements.
2. Delivering new courts where they are needed most
Current projections show more than 330 additional indoor courts are required across NSW over the next decade to meet community demand. This includes the need for a State Basketball Centre, regional excellence hubs, and a network of modern multi-court venues across both metropolitan and regional areas.
3. Strengthening pathways and community programs through better facilities
Our facility plan supports the growth of key participation, inclusion, and development programs—ensuring players, coaches, referees, and volunteers have access to the right environments to learn, train and compete.
The plan also highlights the need for innovative facility models such as training centres, half-court formats, and highly accessible spaces that support informal play and small-group activities.
This is a long-term commitment. The Facility Plan will be reviewed every two years to stay aligned with population growth, demand trends, government planning cycles, and emerging opportunities.
We recognise that delivering new and upgraded venues requires strong collaboration. Local associations, councils, state and federal governments, schools, PCYC branches, venue operators, and community partners all play a vital role. Our job is to guide, support and advocate, ensuring basketball’s needs are understood, planned for, and prioritised.
The Infrastructure Strategy and Facility Plan reinforces our mission to grow the game sustainably and ensure that every community in NSW has access to quality places to play. This work is essential to supporting our vision of Basketball for Everyone – Everywhere.
