Basketball NSW today announced that Maria Nordstrom, who has served as Chief Executive Officer (CEO) since 2017 will retire from her position, leaving the business on Friday 19th December.

“We thank Maria for her significant contributions and wish her the very best in her future endeavours,” said Lisa Yen, Chair of the Basketball NSW Board.
“Our sincere appreciation is extended to Maria for her leadership, commitment and vision. Her tenure as Chief Executive Officer has strengthened our sport and provided us with a solid foundation for continued growth and success in the future,” she added.
Ms Nordstrom has played a pivotal role in growing participation and advocating for the growth of basketball in NSW. Further to advancing key strategic priorities, the provision of infrastructure development, government advocacy and community partnerships, she has championed a range of inclusion and participation activities including the “I am a Girl” and “Our Mob, Our Game” programs. Maria was instrumental in working with the NSW Government in obtaining funding and securing the bid for the FIBA Women’s World Cup in 2022, positioning NSW as a premier destination for basketball tournaments in the Asia Pacific.
The Board are confident in the team’s ability to maintain momentum whilst the thorough search for a new Chief Executive Officer commences with the aim to appoint a permanent successor to lead Basketball NSW into its next phase of growth.
Ms. Nordstrom said, “It has been a privilege to lead Basketball NSW for the last 9 years. I am incredibly proud of the team and what we have achieved, and I wish the company continued success. I wish our associations, partners, staff and my successor the very best for the years to come”.
