Basketball NSW is excited to share that the organisation is a recent recipient of the latest NSW Government’s Her Sport Her Way Grant for 2023 to assist in the advancement of adolescent participation within basketball.

The ‘Grit for Girls in Basketball Program’ is a Pilot program that will focus on girls 14-16 in the BNSW High-Performance Program and aims to increase participation in adolescent girls. In collaboration with world-renowned Performance Psychologist Karen Haddad, a series of workshops will be presented to educate and empower girls, parents, and coaches on dealing with mental health and body image issues.

Basketball NSW, CEO, Maria Nordstrom said that this new program will continue to build upon all the positive investments that the organisation has made over the past few years.

“Grit for Girls is a key initiative that will be breaking new ground within our sport because not only will it encourage young teenagers to stay playing basketball but also the creation of a holistic program that also focuses on workshops off the court will be immensely beneficial for all participants.”

“Coming off the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup in 2022, basketball is booming across the state and we need to consciously keep supporting females within our community as they progress through our High Performance pathways so that they too can become future Australian Opals.”

The Her Sport Her Way Grant Program is a key initiative of the NSW Government’s Her Sport Her Way strategy. The Program aligns with the Office of Sport Strategic Plan and supports sports participation plans. It provides more than $2.5 million over four years to assist our NSW State Sporting Organisations to develop and deliver new initiatives to increase participation of women and girls in sport, on and off the field, and build cultures of diversity and inclusion. This year the Program continues to have a particular focus on initiatives that target adolescent girls.

Minister for Sport, Alister Henskens said the Her Sport Her Way program supports State Sporting Organisations to deliver new initiatives that turbocharge female sporting participation.

“This program is all about increasing female participation in sport, whether that’s on the field or in administration, coaching or volunteer roles,” Mr Henskens said.

“Since the inception of this program four years ago, the number of women and girls playing sport has evolved and diversified, and by investing in grassroots programs and initiatives across NSW, we will continue to secure a brighter future for women in sport.”
