Basketball NSW is proud to officially launch its new statewide initiative, Respect the Game, a campaign designed to promote a culture of respect, safety and sportsmanship across all levels of basketball.

The campaign responds to a growing need to reinforce positive behaviours across the basketball community, ensuring that players, coaches, referees, administrators and spectators can all participate in an environment that is safe, supportive and enjoyable.

Respect the Game aims to protect what makes basketball great, a sport built on teamwork, development and enjoyment, by addressing behaviours that detract from the experience for participants, particularly young players and officials.

The initiative is underpinned by five key phases

  • Education: understanding the impact of behaviour
  • Awareness: making respect visible across every court
  • Zero Tolerance: setting clear expectations
  • Reinforcement: recognising positive behaviours
  • Review: holding ourselves accountable

Basketball NSW, Chair, Lisa Yen said the campaign reflects the responsibility of leadership at all levels of the game.

“Respecting the game starts at the top. Boards and leaders play a critical role in setting the tone for culture within our sport,” said Yen.

“This campaign is about ensuring we lead by example and create an environment where players, coaches and officials feel supported, valued and safe.”

Interim CEO, David Simpson emphasised the importance of a united approach across the basketball community.

“Respect the Game is a collective effort. Creating positive environments requires everyone, from administrators and coaches to parents and spectators, to play their part,” added Simpson.

By coming together around a shared set of values, we can strengthen the experience for everyone involved in our game.”

As part of the campaign rollout, Basketball NSW will also host a series of free online webinars, featuring voices from across the basketball community, as well as individuals who exemplify the values of respect in sport and leadership.

These sessions are designed to educate, inspire and provide practical guidance on how to create positive environments on and off the court.

Basketball NSW encourages all associations, clubs and participants to get involved, access campaign resources, and play their part in building a better basketball culture.

This is our game, and it’s up to all of us to RESPECT THE GAME.
