Today the NSW Government have announced the projects that have been awarded with funding as part of the NSW Government’s $25 million Female Friendly Community Sport Facilities and Lighting Upgrade Program and Basketball NSW is excited to share the details of the seven successful venues that have been selected for upgrades for basketball.
The overall Program investment will revive sport facilities by providing new and redeveloping existing sport facility bathrooms and change rooms. Funding will also support the provision of new and upgraded lighting that will enable more women and girls to train and compete in sport in a safe and inclusive environment.

| Ross Whitaker Pavilion Female Facilities Upgrade | Goulburn Mulwaree Council | $98,004.00 | The project will replace the old, disused toilets, disability toilet and first aid room in the Ross Whitaker Pavilion at Goulburn Recreation Area with a refurbished, Female Friendly toilet and change facilities, disability toilet and first aid room; which will meet the needs of multiple sports, schools and community groups in Goulburn Mulwaree Local Government Area and wider region. The upgrade will address current access and inclusion barriers for participants and spectators at the pavilion, drive increased utilisation and grow participation for women and girls in sport, assisting to build a strong, resilient and active community. |
| Alexandria Basketball Stadium and Female Amenities Upgrade | City of Sydney Basketball Association | $207,825.00 | The current female and accessible facilities are at end of life and are in a very dilapidated condition. The Alexandria Stadium is over 50 years old and has had limited refurbishment, the project proposes to upgrade the female, referee and accessible amenities within the stadium to provide safe, equitable and accessible facilities that are of an acceptable and modern standard. |
| Sutherland Basketball Stadium Toilets and Changerooms Upgrade | Sutherland District Basketball Association Inc | $134,834.00 | Upgrades to the Changeroom and Toilet Facilities at the Sutherland Stadium to support Dignified Participation and meet current Female Friendly, OH&S and statutory requirements. The proposed upgrades will improve wheelchair and disability accessibility. With new lighting, power outlets, toilet bowls, Shower taps, exhaust, mirrors, tiling, ceiling work, painting and all-abilities access, the upgrades will provide participants and the wider public access to safe and quality amenities. |
| Snakepit Stadium Female and Accessible Amenities Upgrade and Lighting Upgrade | Illawarra Basketball Association | $244,469.00 | The current female, accessible facilities and stadium lighting are at end of life and are in a very dilapidated condition. The project proposes to upgrade the female, and accessible amenities within the Comets to provide safe, equitable and accessible facilities that are of an acceptable and modern standard as well as providing new stadium lighting for all 4 basketball courts. |
| Cobar Indoor Sports Stadium Lighting Upgrade and Outdoor Security Lighting | Cobar Shire Council | $50,000.00 | Cobar Shire Council proposes to upgrade existing lighting within the indoor stadium and construct new outdoor security lights located at the Cobar Youth and Community Centre. The indoor stadium will be upgraded with new LED energy efficient lighting. Security lights will be constructed outside at the front and back entrances of the facility to increase the safety of entering and existing the facility. This facility is utilized frequently as it’s the only public indoor multi-use stadium. The upgrades to the indoor lighting will support the usability of the courts and the outdoor security lights will improve the safety and security. |

| Expansion Of Female Amenities at West Ryde Multi-Sport Facility | Police Citizens Youth Clubs NSW Ltd | $377,556.00 | School Infrastructure NSW is redeveloping the former Marsden High School site as a new sporting complex. Stage 1 will feature a 4800sqm indoor facility with four multisport courts, 32 outdoor netball courts, communal outdoor areas and car/bicycle parking. PCYC NSW is seeking funding to vary the current design to construct additional female amenities to increase its capacity, functionality and demand of female participants. The current design has a small gym and outdoor storage area which will be reallocated as female toilets, accessible toilets and change rooms. |
| Female amenities, external lighting and CCTV installation at PCYC Hawkesbury | Police Citizens Youth Clubs NSW Ltd | $482,202.00 | This project forms part of a current $14.8 million investment in the facility upgrade at PCYC Hawkesbury, to enhance female sports participation through the delivery of safe, functional and flexible sports facilities. The facility is the region’s largest indoor sports stadium, and PCYC’s major redevelopment will improve access, participation and sports/recreation sustainability for the local region into the future. To improve capacity, functionality, environmental sustainability and safety, funding is requested to enhance this investment with priority works including female bathroom/change room refurbishment and conversion of the male bathrooms to unisex plus the installation of external lighting and CCTV cameras. |
Basketball NSW, CEO, Maria Nordstrom expressed her elation on the news that several key basketball facilities will receive significant upgrades due to the NSW Government’s Female Friendly Community Sport Facilities and Lighting Upgrade Program.
“Basketball is a sport focused on equity and inclusion. Everything we do provides equal opportunity for boys and girls. The Her Sport Her Way Strategy by the NSW Government has allowed us to to focus on driving development programs and facilities improvements for women and girls across our sport,” said Nordstrom.
“The environment is one of the key factors to participation for women and girls. This grant program will create a significant upgrade in facilities all across NSW. This will support our sports significant growth in popularity. Basketball’s participation membership grew by 31% in NSW in 2022. We attribute this to an increase in programs and marketing linked to the FIBA Women’s World Cup and the legacy programs funded by the government and we foresee this growth to continue and are looking forward to the upgrades being completed across the state.”
The Program will support quality projects that meet community need demonstrated by consultation with women and girls to deliver a quality facility that makes women and girls feel safe, welcome and included. Quality infrastructure is not only reflected in the physical form, but how it is designed, integrated with its environment, maintained and through the ongoing sport activities it supports.
The Program will support the delivery of sport facility projects that can directly support sport participation across all levels by providing programs for women and girls across New South Wales. The NSW Government is supporting local communities to provide sport infrastructure that is universally designed and moves beyond compliant and provides dignified inclusion and accessibility for all.
