Basketball NSW in partnership with the NSW Government and the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup are excited to announce that Daughters & Dads Basketball is set to launch in Term 2 at St George and Central Coast Basketball Associations.

Both programs running in Term 2 are the first Basketball programs of their kind being run in Australia.  As part of the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup Legacy Program, Daughters & Dads Basketball has been developed by The University of Newcastle, in partnership with the Office of Sport and Basketball NSW.

The Daughters & Dads Basketball program is targeted at primary school girls aged 7-12 years old and their dads (or father figure) who join in a combination of practical and education sessions running for 90 mins over 9 consecutive weeks focusing on the skills found within basketball. The program caters for all skill levels from non-basketballers to players.

Daughters & Dads attend weekly sessions together, focusing on:

  • Rough and tumble play, and ball handling;
  • Skill development (e.g., defensive skills, 1v1, shooting & finishing);
  • Fun modified basketball games;
  • Well-being education aimed at developing daughters’:
    • Bravery
    • Persistence
    • Resilience

Basketball NSW, CEO, Maria Nordstrom said she is thrilled to start rolling out this unique and exciting program to young females and male role models over the next few months.

“It is exciting to rollout this new entry program for Basketball in 2022.  It is this first programming change we have had for quite some time in our sport.  We are looking forward to be working with members of our community to help increase the number of strong, powerful girls playing Basketball around NSW,” said Nordstrom.

“Research shows the influence of fathers on their daughters in sports participation. We can help reiterate the key strategies developed by University of Newcastle engaging fathers and daughters in basketball as well as assist in removing restrictive gender biases which can limit girls’ participation in sport. The sessions are built around a number of key attributes and there is no limit to what these young girls and their dads can learn from one another over the 9 week program and beyond.”

Are you a dad who wants to spend quality time with your daughter participating in fun physical activities, whilst learning how to improve her sport skills, confidence, self-esteem and resilience?
