You may have noticed this past weekend that our referees officiating across all competitions swapped out their traditional lanyards to wear the white Hidden Disabilities Sunflower “Sunflower Supporter” lanyard.
This is because, once again running across all of May, Basketball NSW is proud to announce the return of the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower Australian Program after adopting the initiative last year, with all our technical officials wearing the Sunflower in support of those with hidden disabilities.
The Hidden Disabilities Sunflower is an internationally recognised symbol for non-visible disabilities and conditions. These may include autism, chronic pain, dementia, anxiety, visual or hearing impairments, and many other conditions that may not be immediately apparent to others.
Individuals living with these conditions may choose to wear a Sunflower lanyard, badge, or wristband to discreetly indicate that they may require additional support, whether that be a helping hand, greater understanding, or extra patience when communicating.
The Sunflower Supporter lanyard acts as a visible sign that the wearer recognises and understands the experiences and challenges associated with invisible disabilities. It represents a commitment to being supportive, respectful, and willing to assist where appropriate.
The initiative was launched in the UK in 2016 and has since grown into a global movement embraced by organisations and public services around the world.
This initiative highlights Basketball NSW’s continued mission to create an inclusive environment where everyone, regardless of age, gender, ability, or background, can enjoy and participate in the game. This commitment is also reflected through initiatives such as Assist All Hoops, which continues to support greater accessibility and inclusion within basketball communities across New South Wales.
Earlier in April, Basketball NSW launched Respect The Game, Basketball NSW’s statewide initiative designed to promote a culture of respect, safety, and sportsmanship across all levels of basketball.
