On Saturday October 7, we held our second ‘I am a GIRL’ Conference for 2017. This one themed ‘Annie’s Story’, the spotlight was on our Ambassador Annie La Fleur, who courageously shared her story from her childhood, and overcoming personal/private obstacles whilst moving her way up the ranks of not only basketball in Australia, but also in the WNBA. The 2000 Sydney Olympian, answered questions from the group honestly, and the girls were able to gain an insight into Annie’s career, but more importantly, take comfort that over coming personal adversity is achievable.
Following Annie’s Story, we were lucky enough to have Malinda from Head Space join us. October is ‘Mental Health month’, so was quite timely that we were able to engage with Head Space, to learn some tips and share stories.
Building on the momentum from May’s workshop, the group were able to bust some myths surrounding mental health, but also create a safe space to share personal experiences, and learn new ways to look after themselves, and also friends and family.
Breaking down the barriers of mental health is so important within our community, with one in four young people having experienced a mental health issue in the last 12 months. 75% of mental health problems emerge before the age of 25, so providing support and education in this area, can go a long way to creating a safe environment for ourselves and peers.
I am a Girl, is committed to not only inspiring the next generation of leaders, but also providing a variety of tools to be leaders in their own associations, and every day life.
