With Covid-19 safety protocols in place, camps were run across seven venues including Dubbo, Coffs Harbour, Tamworth, Byron Bay, Taree, Ballina and Wagga Wagga. Targeted at the grass roots level and appropriate for ages 7-21 years of age, these school holiday camps gave participants a chance to hone their skills in a safe and fun environment.

Former Opal Annie Le Fleur, ex-WNBL player Lauren King, BNSW Development Officers and various representative club coaches were on hand to coach all 520 participants in a number of key development areas such as drills, teaching techniques and game-like scrimmages. A number of local community members also joined in on the off-court sessions including Police Liaison Officers, Aboriginal Medical Services and Solid Mob to assist in the education and communication around Indigenous affairs for the participants and their families.

Basketball NSW, Indigenous, Cultural & Linguistically Diverse Programs Manager, Jacqui Dover said she was pleased to see the first round of IBA x BNSW Camps saw a reach of over 500 athletes that joined in on the first round of the program.

“It was wonderful to see these increased opportunities for Indigenous kids that live in our regional towns in NSW that may not normally have access to these active and development opportunities,” said Dover.

“The support we received from our host venues, local community members and organisations made for successful and enjoyable camps across regional NSW. Having over 500 young athletes registered to attend is an amazing result for our first roll-out of these camps, and the team and I look forward to providing further opportunities across NSW next holidays.”
Basketball New South Wales would also like to say a huge thank-you to all the associations that were involved as well as Biripi Aboriginal Medical Services, Galambila (Healthy food talk), Aboriginal Community Liaison Officer for NSW Police & the NSW Police for their support in the rollout of the camps. A number of activations will be rolled out each year leading up to the FIBA Women’s World Basketball Cup 2022.

Postponed camps and clinics will be rescheduled, keep your eyes out on our website for further announcements.
