Basketball NSW congratulates Lauretta Claus AM on being named a recipient of the Sport NSW Distinguished Long Service Award, recognising more than four decades of outstanding service and contribution to basketball at the community, national and international levels.
She will be formally recognised at the 2026 NSW Community Sports Awards, on Monday the 29th of June, alongside 25 other volunteers and administrators who have dedicated more than 25 years to advancing sport across New South Wales.
The Distinguished Long Service Award acknowledges individuals who have demonstrated extraordinary commitment to their sport and community through decades of service as officials, coaches, administrators and event organisers.
A former NSW representative player from 1979 to 1982, Australian World University Games athlete and WNBL player with the Bankstown Bruins, Claus’ influence on basketball extends far beyond her playing career.
Widely regarded as Australia’s leading authority on basketball statistics, Claus transitioned into officiating and statistics during the mid-1980s and has since become one of the most respected technical officials in world basketball. She has served as Head Statistician for the Sydney Kings since 1988, NBL Statistics Advisor since 1998, WNBL Statistics Advisor since 2002, and FIBA Oceania Statistics Manager since 2015.
Her contribution to the game has helped shape the way basketball statistics are collected, interpreted and utilised across the globe.
Among her many achievements, she co-created the FIBA Stats Project and the FIBA Stats Licence, which has become a mandatory qualification for statisticians working at international basketball events. These initiatives have established greater consistency, professionalism and education pathways for technical officials worldwide.
Her expertise has seen her appointed to some of the sport’s biggest stages, including the Sydney 2000 Olympic and Paralympic Games, multiple FIBA Basketball World Cups, the 2006 and 2018 Commonwealth Games, and most recently the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
Her passion for developing others has been equally impactful. As Chairperson of the Australian Basketball Statistics Committee since 1992 and a leading instructor across the NBL, WNBL and state competitions, Claus has mentored countless statisticians who have progressed to elite levels of the sport.
In 2015, FIBA Oceania appointed her as Lead Stats Instructor, a role that has seen her educate and support technical officials across the region. She also co-created the FIBA Stats Project, designed to bring clarity and consistency to international statistical interpretation. At the 2019 FIBA Basketball World Cup and the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, Claus was entrusted with providing real-time feedback and development support to statisticians working on the world’s biggest basketball events.
Closer to home, Claus has made a significant contribution to the governance and growth of basketball in New South Wales, having served on the Basketball NSW Board on three separate occasions. A regular presence at Basketball NSW events and Waratah League Finals, she remains committed to supporting the development of the next generation of statisticians and technical officials, generously passing on the knowledge and experience she has accumulated over more than four decades in the sport.
Claus’ extraordinary contribution to basketball has been recognised through numerous honours. In 2019, she was inducted into the Basketball NSW Hall of Fame. In 2025, she was further honoured with appointment as a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) for her significant contributions to basketball and education.
