The 2016/17 Season was one of the most successful on record in no small part due to the ongoing commitment of the men and women that make up our Technical Officiating group. We engaged over 150 people to fill the roles on match day and intend on using the feedback from our experts to improve this very important area of the NBL as we embark on the 40th Anniversary Season of the NBL in Season 2017/18.

In the 2017/18 season the National Basketball League will utilise a similar process to last season to identify, appoint, roster, communicate with and facilitate payment, for game day technical officials. The NBL recognises that Technical Officials (TO) hold a key position in ensuring the quality and success of the league.

Suitably qualified and interested technical officials are asked to apply online and then the NBL Technical Officials Advisory panel will determine the selection of the successful TO’s for the upcoming season. Interested personnel will be committing to making themselves available for a large majority of the games throughout the season.

In 2017/18 there will be selected personnel who will fill the roles of Scoretable Chairperson and Head Statistician who will be required at least 90 minutes prior to game time. These positions will be required to manage the scoretable and stats benches on game night as well as directly liaise with the NBL Match Day Manager (Game Commissioner).

The other selected TOs, will be rostered across the various positions on the scoretable (shot clock, game time, scoresheet and assistant scorer/visuals) and stats bench (computer inputter X 2 and spotter) based on experience and capability.

Selection Process

It is preferable that technical officials hold a FIBA accreditation, however the minimum expected qualification is that scoretable officials be Level 3, and statisticians be Level 2. There will be a strong focus that the official has been active throughout the NBL off season.

All applicants will be given an opportunity to provide qualification levels, past experience and any other information that supports their application. The NBL will appoint Technical Officials that they believe are best suited for the roles available, successful applicants will be notified via email within 14 days of the close of applications.

In response to feedback from previous NBL Technical Officials, the NBL is committed to providing meaningful feedback and professional development for all panel members. Efforts will be made by the TO Advisory Panel to regularly communicate with the Scoretable Chairs and Head Statisticians, as well as provide regular communications to all panel members.

This regular communication will allow the TO Advisory Panel to check on TO knowledge at each venue and address any anomalies and inconsistencies that may emerge throughout the season.

TO Advisory Panel

In the upcoming 2017/18 Season, the NBL will be utilising the TO Advisory Panel of Naree Wittwer, Libby Woods (Scoretable), Tracey Teunissen and Lauretta Claus (Statisticians) to fulfil the following obligations:

  • Rostering all stats and scoretable personnel and if personnel are unavailable, organizing replacements;
  • Selection of applicants to the 2017-18 NBL TO panel;
  • Provide regular communication to Chairs and Head Statisticians;
  • Coordinate the training and development of scoretable and stats personnel;
  • Provide communication and feedback to NBL TOs around performance and any changes to game night procedures etc;
  • Respond to specific issues or concerns that may arise and assist in resolving where necessary.
