Basketball NSW would like to share with our members some key points from our 2024 Annual General Meeting that was held on the 25th of May.
New Chair Appointment:
Basketball NSW proudly announces Lisa Yen as the newly appointed Chair, succeeding Jenny Dean, who reached her maximum term in office along with nine consecutive years as a Director
Jenny Dean joined the Board of Basketball NSW in 2014, bringing her proactive experience from the Hornsby Basketball Association, where she significantly improved association governance, financial management, and coached various junior representative teams. Dean’s leadership journey saw her become the first female Chair in the history of Basketball NSW in 2019, following the retirement of Bob Elphinston OAM.
During her tenure, Jenny Dean led BNSW through a period of growth and achievement, collaborating closely with CEO Maria Nordstrom and her team. Notable highlights under her leadership include hosting the Women’s World Cup in Sydney in 2022 and securing the FIBA Women’s Asia Cup in 2023. These events were pivotal in revitalizing the “I AM A Girl” program, which gained rapid popularity across the state.
Dean’s dedication to stability, unity, and inclusion within the sport has been unwavering. She focused on supporting volunteer Directors statewide and increasing participation rates. The BNSW board, staff, and the entire basketball community express their deepest gratitude to Jenny for her decade of dedication and service. Her continued presence at basketball events will be warmly welcomed.
Lisa Yen, now the second female Chair of Basketball NSW, brings a wealth of experience to the role, having been involved with the Board since 2021. The organization looks forward to her leadership in continuing the upward trajectory of basketball in New South Wales.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to outgoing Board members Steve Lennon and Jenny Dean for their invaluable contributions.
We are also excited to welcome our newest Directors, Donna McClelland and Alison Brandon, who will join the current Directors Lisa Yen, Lauretta Claus, Mark Wilks, Janelle Reid, and Anton Brown.
The Board’s role remains crucial in providing local guidance and leadership to the sport of basketball in New South Wales. Their efforts ensure that our local associations receive the necessary support and that the performance of our business is closely monitored.
Life Members:
This year one member of our basketball community was granted Basketball NSW Life Memberships, which now totals 44 outstanding Life Members.
We welcome Basketball NSW Legend, Dr. Adrian Hurley OAM.
Dr. Adrian Hurley OAM has been an outstanding contributor to New South Wales and Australian basketball for more than four decades. A New South Wales representative for five years, including captaining the team in 1971, Hurley’s natural forte is in education and he went on to become one of the countries greatest basketball coaches.
After a stint as head coach of the Illawarra Hawks, he was the founding coach of the Australian Institute of Sport basketball program, a position he held for eleven years at a time when Australian basketball was booming at both a local level through the NBL and in international competitions.
After assisting Lindsey Gaze at the World Championships in 1982 and Olympic Games in 1984, he took the reigns as the national senior coach for seven years. In 1988, Hurley created history by leading the Australian Boomers to the medal rounds of the Olympic Games.
Among other outstanding achievements, he coached the Perth Wildcats to the NBL title in 1995, was named NBL Coach of the Year in 2004-5 and NSW Coach of the Year in 2001-2003.
The rivalry between our two NSW based NBL teams, the Sydney Kings and the Illawarra Hawks is also marked by the Legend with the two teams vying for the Adrian Hurley Cup each time they meet during the season.
Life Membership is restricted to those who have contributed to the control, promotion, integration, or fostering of partnership and development of basketball by their participation in the activities of the New South Wales Basketball Association or in the activities of the Company for a total period of 15 years and who are, with the approval of the Board, nominated by a member for election at an annual general meeting of the company.
