As Basketball NSW begins preparations for the upcoming season, there are a few exciting changes that will occur in the 2022 season.

Spalding Eastern Junior League & Northern Junior League

In 2022 BNSW will combine the Eastern and Northern Junior Leagues to form the North-Eastern Junior League. This will help to create a stronger competition for all involved in these two regions. This league will play in two separate pools, a North Coast Pool and a Hunter/New England Pool. They will play 2 full rounds in pools and also play 2 full rounds of crossovers.

Round 1.1 will commence on Saturday 5th of March for both pools with the Grand Finals taking place on Saturday 16th and Sunday 17th July in Port Macquarie

Spalding Metro Junior League

2022 will see the revised Metro Junior League format continue for the second season. Playing with a reduced number of teams in each division has allowed for higher levels of competition within each division. MJL Pre-Season games will commence on the 12th and 13th of March 2022, with the season officially commencing on the 24th of April and finishing on the 24th of July 2022 with Grand Finals.

Spalding Junior Premier League

2021 saw the commencement of the Junior Premier League competition for associations in regional areas, while Metro Junior League played in a Premier Division. 2022 will see JPL continue but now incorporate crossovers between Country and Metro teams throughout the season. This will allow teams to develop further as they have more opportunities to compete with teams from across the state more regularly.

The first games of the season will commence on the 5th and 6th of February 2022 with Country Pre-Season. The season will conclude with a finals weekend in the format of our Junior State Champs on the 5th, 6th and 7th of August 2022.

Spalding Southern Junior League

With ACT set to be the round 1 host and finals host in 2022, our Southern Junior League will be tipping off on March 12th. The season will wrap up with finals being held on May 28th & 29th in the Nation’s Capital.

Spalding Western Junior League

Western Junior League is set to commence on February 19th with all teams converging on venues within the Riverina area. Finals are set to take place in Bathurst on May 7th & 8th.

Spalding State Cup

2022 will see the State Cup return for our representative Juniors on the 30th and 31st of July with venues to be confirmed. This will mean there will be no State Challenges in 2022.

Under 20’s Tournament

Due to the effects of Covid-19 on the various leagues over the past two seasons, Basketball NSW will be holding an Under 20’s tournament in late January and early to mid February.

The aim of this tournament is to allow those in the Under 18 age group who did not get to complete their representative seasons to have the opportunity to compete again at a high level. This tournament will also aim to bridge the gap between U18’s and Youth League, which is U23’s.

BNSW sees this tournament as a great opportunity for development for all that will be involved, not just the players. This tournament will be used to provide education and training to referees who are looking to progress to the Spalding Waratah Senior League, to assist statisticians in getting experience in the new software being used in 2022 and to provide education and practice for any scoretable officials who are interested.

Over the next few years, BNSW will monitor the growth of the tournament and look to review it’s format and potentially run U20’s for a full season.

3×3

To finish off 2021 BNSW will be running four separate 3×3 Hustle Events. Three of these 3×3 tournaments will be Street Hustles. While many people think that Hustle events are aimed at already established players and representative players, Street Hustles are not. We encourage everyone to participate and have fun with friends.

Dates for the Street Hustles are below:
Street Hustle 13th November at West Wyalong
Street Hustle 20th November at Illawarra
Street Hustle 27th November at Port Macquarie

Our last Hustle event for the year will be the NSW Big Hustle State Champs where the winners can Qualify for Nationals in January 2022. This will take place on the 4th of December at Hills Basketball Stadium.

Moving into 2022 BNSW is planning on running even more 3×3 Hustle Events. We have eight Street Hustles and four Big Hustle Qualifiers planned throughout the year. The Street Hustles are scheduled for the school holidays and the Big Hustle Qualifiers are scheduled for November. The winners of the Qualifiers will progress to our Big Hustle State Champs to be held in January 2023. Keep an eye out for further information on our socials for date announcements.

Basketball NSW, Senior Manager for Competitions & Leagues, Chanelle Bailey said she is excited for our junior members to be able return to competitions over the next few months.

“We are excited to return back to a jam-packed calendar for our junior competitions in 2022,”

“After a tough 2021, we have collectively worked with our Associations to build a sustainable and exciting 2022 calendar of events.  We hope that with the return of Community Sport in NSW, our Associations can start looking forward to getting back on court especially with our 3×3 Hustle events set to tip off next month.”

All BNSW events will be operating under COVID-19 safety guidelines and will be subject to Government advice.

We look forward to seeing everyone back on the court for the 2022 season.
