Snowy Monaro can now kickstart their sporting aspirations, with three brand-new purpose-built facilities opened thanks to a generous funding plan from the NSW Government.
The Cooma Regional Sports Facility opened this month after four years of consultation and development. The $15 million facility features a three-court indoor sport facility at Monaro High School and a synthetic athletics track and field at Snowy Oval. The new facility is expected to host basketball, netball, athletics, afl, cricket and a range of other sports.
The new sports hub also includes accessible changerooms, storage areas, entry reception and box office, canteen, first aid room, seating, lighting and ventilation.

Tumbarumba basketballers will also benefit from funding as part of the NSW Government’s Stronger Country Communities Fund with a $300,000 upgrade to the local stadium. The local basketball stadium will be including two new courts and will be an advantage for the Tumbarumba Basketball Association to take advantage of the growing numbers in the local town, eager to participate in the sport.
The stadium will also be refreshed in a number of other areas including new floors across the courts as back in November 2021, the stadium was closed for a long period of time due to the devastating floods in the town.

More than $10.6 million has also been secured to build an indoor sports facility in Tumut, which will also double as an emergency and evacuation centre in the event of a natural disaster. The money, which comes from the federal government’s second round of the Bushfire Local Economic Fund, is among more than $25 million that will be injected into the region by the government.
Tumut Basketball Stadium will transition into a facility that is large enough to accommodate up to two indoor basketball courts, spectator seating of up to 250 people, required amenities, car parking, office accommodation and a cafe. Following site investigations, a parcel of Council managed land at Lockeridge Park has been approved for the development.
Currently sitting at the Application Development Stage, Basketball NSW in conjunction with Tumut Basketball Association will work with the State Government to put forward proposed concepts and feedback in the community consultation phase.

Basketball NSW, CEO, Maria Nordstrom said she was excited about the prospect of the new developments within the region.
“Due to the growth of basketball across the state, the Cooma, Tumbarumba and Tumut indoor facilities will bring more people access to opportunities for physical activity and allow our kids to pursue their own dreams of playing our sport,” said Nordstrom.
“Having these new and or updated stadiums will allow athletes and children to take part in a range of sporting codes year-round, and provide the local region a safe haven for participation and or in the event of a natural disaster.”
