Basketball NSW acknowledges with great sadness the passing of Basketball NSW Life Member Nancy Haslop, whose lifelong contribution to basketball has left an enduring legacy across New South Wales.
Nancy dedicated more than five decades to the game she loved, making an extraordinary impact as a player, coach, administrator, mentor and advocate for country basketball. Her passion for developing athletes, coaches and communities helped shape generations of basketball across regional New South Wales.
As a player, Nancy represented Lithgow, Macquarie University and Ryde over more than two decades and proudly wore the sky blue of New South Wales, representing the NSW Open Women’s Team in 1970 and 1973.
While her playing career was impressive, it was through coaching and leadership that Nancy made her greatest mark on the sport.
Beginning her coaching journey in the mid-1970s, Nancy devoted more than 40 years to developing young athletes and coaches at every level of the game. She played an instrumental role in Basketball NSW’s country pathway, serving as a selector, manager and Head Coach across numerous NSW Country Women’s State Teams. She also led the Basketball NSW West ITC program, coached with the Western Region Academy of Sport, and contributed to countless Basketball NSW development camps and tours, including the first six Australian Junior Country Basketball Cups.
Nancy’s influence extended well beyond the court. As Basketball NSW’s Regional Development Officer for the West and Southwest regions from 1995 to 1998, she helped strengthen basketball throughout New South Wales country and played an important role in the development of the Lachlan Conference. She also served on the boards of Bathurst Basketball and the Bathurst Basketball Council and was a driving force behind the formation of Bathurst Basketball United.
Her expertise was recognised internationally, with Nancy selected to deliver coaching through the Olympic Solidarity program in Fiji, while she also led more than ten international basketball tours, providing life-changing experiences for hundreds of athletes and coaches.
Away from Basketball NSW, Nancy served as Executive Officer of the Western Region Academy of Sport from 2000 to 2016, where she introduced initiatives that strengthened the academy and further expanded opportunities for regional athletes.
Throughout her remarkable career, Nancy’s service was recognised with numerous honours, including the Australian Sports Medal, a Basketball NSW Merit Award, Bathurst Living Legend recognition, Life Membership of the Western Region Academy of Sport, and ultimately, Life Membership of Basketball NSW.
Nancy’s legacy reaches far beyond the many roles and titles she held. She was a pioneer for country basketball, a respected leader, and an unwavering advocate for women in sport. Her commitment to developing others, her generosity with her time and knowledge, and her passion for creating opportunities have left an immeasurable impact on basketball across New South Wales.
Basketball NSW extends its sincere condolences to Nancy’s family and to her many friends, teammates, players and colleagues throughout the basketball community.
Nancy’s contribution will continue to be felt through the countless players, coaches, officials and administrators she inspired throughout her lifetime.
