Association Team of the Year:

Basketball New South is excited to announce the 2019 Annual Award Winners of the Association Team of the Year Award, for our Senior & Junior competition.

Basketball New South Wales would like to congratulate the 2019 Senior Association Team of the Year, the Newcastle Championship Women.

The Newcastle Championship Women’s team went 19 games undefeated to start the 2019 season before finishing 22-2 and recorded one of the most convincing grand final victories in recent memory. The team led a star-studded Canberra Nationals by as many as 42 points midway through the match before cruising to a 25-point win. It was Newcastle’s second women’s championship in four years and their sixth overall.

Basketball New South Wales would like to congratulate the 2019 Junior Association Team of the Year, the U14 Boys Hills Hornets.

It’s been a phenomenal year for the U14 Boys Hills Hornets side winning all three major Championships they contended and finishing the season as the top U14 Boys team in Australia. This includes U14 Boys National Club Championships, U14 Boys Waratah Metro Junior League Championships and  U14 Boys Basketball NSW State Championships.

This group of boys have adopted the NSW style of play, they play as a team game and for each other. As a sign of the Hills boys sportsmanship on and off the court, the Hills U14D1 boys also have formed firm friendships with fellow NSW and interstate teams.

Coach Of The Year:

Basketball NSW is pleased to announce David Hayman from Hills Basketball Association as the recipient of the 2019 Coach of the Year Award.

This year Coach David Hayman was the Head Coach of the U14 Hills Hornets D1 boys who won all three Championship titles they contended including the U14 Boys National Club Championships, U14 Boys Waratah Metro Junior League Championships and U14 Boys Basketball NSW State Championships.

Dave is much loved by the local Hills community, focusing on each players individual strengths to assist in their development and stressing the importance of teamwork. Dave trained his players to become multi skilled team members in both offense and defence and developed each of them to be as valuable as each other.  He was also awarded Hills Hornets Boys Program Coach of the Year.

Dave is truly worthy of this award this year, he is a leader both on and off the court and has the support of not only other coaches, players and parents but the wider NSW basketball community.

Most Successful Association on Court:

The award for Most Successful Association on Court is completed via an algorithm, which sees points be given to teams based on their performance. The more teams an association has that make finals and therefore finish with a higher position within their league (1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc.) the more points an association will receive towards their tally. The award is then split into three (3) categories, allowing a Senior, Junior and Overall winner.

Most Successful Senior Association on Court  – Gosford City Basketball Association

Most Successful Junior Association on Court – City of Sydney Basketball Association

Most Successful Overall Association on CourtManly Warringah Basketball Association

Association Coaching Program of the Year:

Congratulations to the City of Sydney Basketball Association.

The CSBA coaching committee consists of Paul Mellett, Robert Van Houten and Denzil Fiebig. The City of Sydney Basketball Association has been a long-time supporter of coach education and coach development initiatives, 2019 was no different.

The club hosted 1 Club Coach Courses which assisted in the accreditation of over 23 coaches. The association had 8 of its coaches committed to Basketball NSW’ various High-Performance Programs, and 3 coaches involved in the State Team Programs. The association’s continual success throughout the junior ranks is a testament to the strong work the association has committed to doing in the coach education and development space.

Association Referee Program of the Year:

Associations over 2,000 members in registrations- Hills Basketball Association.

Hills Basketball Association have incorporated the new curriculum and as such have appointed a referee coach to oversee each grading level and they are called Referee Curriculum Coaches (RCC). Their role is to manage the coaching and development for the individuals that are at the curriculum grade they are assigned to. They are also to assess the grading level below, therefore the Intermediate RCC would coach and educate all the Association Intermediate Referees but would do the assessment for the Association Development Referees looking to be upgraded. The Hills referee education program has adopted a branding with the slogan “Make the Call” and has been great at promoting the program across socials.

Through their hard work, Hills continues to  grow the number of referees to match the growth of the competition.

Associations under 2,000 members in registrations- Coffs Harbour Basketball Association

Coffs Harbour Basketball Association has had a magnificent year in terms of their referee numbers the development provided to them. CHBA identified there was a big challenge to engage and retain referees, so they employed the expertise of a qualified Referee Development Officer in Alison Ross. Alison has been instrumental in developing and empowering CHBA’s referees and providing them with the support and expert knowledge they need.

Through Alison’s hard work, CHBA have been able to work with BNSW to deliver learning and in-game management opportunities whilst fostering their own referee education.

Administrator of the Year:

The Administrator of the Year award is split into two categories :

Administrator of the Year (Paid) – Mel Thompson – City of Sydney Basketball Association

Mel started working at CSBA as the Manager of Competitions in 2015.  She has basketball in her blood and is totally passionate about improving competitions at CSBA.  Mel rarely takes a day off work, never cuts corners and gives maximum effort every day.  Mel is particularly passionate about increasing female participation and CSBA have experienced a surge in the area because of her efforts.

Administrator of the Year (Paid) Katrina Blackwood – Springwood Basketball Association

Katrina joined SDBA in April 2017. She had the difficult task of ‘cleaning up’ a lot of issues within the Association’s systems and processes. This involved an incorrect audit, members that were non-financial and not-to-mention, transferring to Sportstg.

Katrina also learned Xero, and transferred all data to this new platform. She also needed to form relationships with the members within a short period of time. Katrina is our first port of call in all contact with the Department of Education, whom we lease our premises through. Since Katrina joined SDBA we have been able to collect over 97% of all representative levies on time (previously this was well below 60%) and streamlined our uniform ordering system. Katrina is certainly a true recipient of this award.

Administrator of the Year (VolunteerKelly Badewitz – Merimbula Basketball Association

Kelly Badewitz has been the heart and soul of the Merimbula Sharks for numerous years. Kelly holds many job titles within the association, ranging from coordinating various local competitions/events, assists with referee payments and rosters, assists with all financial movements, organises uniforms and merchandise and oversees all representative award functions.

In her spare time, Kelly also lends a hand in the canteen and as a referee, it is safe to say that Kelly is a highly sought after in many areas within the association.  Kelly’s positive and can-do attitude has also contributed to the growth and success of the club, and within the past twelve months under Kelly’s guidance Merimbula have also instigated perpetual awards for Club Person, both Junior and Senior and Referee of the season. These awards typify Kelly’s belief in building a club around community pride.

When it comes to training players/coaches and referees in the local area, Merimbula is faced with the tyranny of distance. Although this is a major hurdle it is not something that has stopped Kelly organising local development clinics and holiday camps to further the growth of the association and in the sport.

The workload and commitment to Merimbula and Basketball NSW by Kelly is without parallel and is very deserving of such recognition.

Senior – male/female volunteer 22 years and overKieren Moore Gosford City Basketball Association

Kieren Moore is the president of Gosford city, this in a volunteer position and Kieren donates countless hours to this role. However, Kieran’s contributions stretch far beyond his role as president as he is always the first person to raise his hand to volunteer with any task that needs to be completed around the club.

The other areas that Kieren often assists with include being a committee member of the Central Coast Crusaders Senior Representative Program, video operator for the Central Coast Crusaders games, setting up and packing down of stadium events, transporting players to games and mentoring staff and players when needed.

In addition to the time he has dedicated to the role, Kieren also generously sponsors many events and teams within the club.

Kieren is a fantastic role model and a kind person who is very approachable and easy to communicate with. Kieren is always willing to assist whenever and wherever required. He is very generous with his time and on top of his contributions with our organisation, he also operates his own business and maintains a beautiful family life with his wife and four children.

Kieren has a strong focus on community, sports and improving many facets within the local area, he is extremely reliable and an asset to the organisation which is in a strong position with a bright future largely due to the contributions of Kieren Moore and other key members of their team.

Since Kieren has been involved with Gosford, they have moved from strength the strength in many areas. Kieren has made countless improvements to their governance and best practice which has assisted the association to perform more effectively. Kieran has also built many key relationships with community members and key political members within the area which assists with guidance and support for the association’s initiatives.

One of the most notable contributions would be Kieran’s assistance in obtaining a government grant to repay the $450,000 debt incurred to construct the stadium 26 years ago, this is an enormous achievement and something that has positioned the organisation very favourably from a financial standpoint, meaning that they are able to allocate more funding to provide better facilities and programs for the local community members for years to come. Congratulations Kieren, you are the glue that holds Gosford together and a hugely important figure within the association.

On behalf of Basketball NSW, congratulations to all our award recipients.
