Congratulations to our five NSW teams that have recently competed at the 2019 Under 20 and Ivor Burge National Championships from the 12th-17th of February, at the Australian Centre of Excellence (Australian Institute of Sport Canberra).
Ivor Burge Women:
NSW Country claimed their NSW’s first Ivor Burge Women’s Championships since 2016 with an impressive second half effort against Victoria in the 65-55 Gold Medal victory.
The best way to finish the week was with gold. We played Vic earlier in the week going down by 31 points, which was our only loss for the week. Throughout the week we tried to give even court time where possible, and in doing this we got to look at what we needed to do to get the win in the gold medal game. Defence was our key in stopping a very sharp shooting Victorian team. Our defence was relentless through out the game, which made the Vic’s play a “catch up” game for the most. – Rose Parmenter (Head Coach)

Coached by Kim Murphy and assisted by Kevin Archer our NSW Metro Women also proved to be an impressive force in the tournament finishing fourth in the regular pool games. However, our Metro Women unfortunately were not strong enough to defeat ACT, 81-34 in the Bronze medal match. Congratulations to Metro’s Lisa Mackie who was awarded the Player of the Tournament award.

“The 2019 NSW U20 Women were a pleasure to work with. Any time you are able to be involved with a team who sincerely prioritizes the betterment the team members around them, and this results in their own individual performance being lifted, means you are a part of a special group of people who are competing the right way. These young women worked to improve each game and competed to their maximum until the final siren, and were rewarded for their efforts with a well-earned silver medal.” – Thomas Garlepp (Head Coach)

U20 Men:
Well done to our U20 NSW Men coached by Gosford’s Michael Cassidy, defeating Tasmania 69-79, in the Battle of the Bronze after edging out TAS 82-68 in the regular pool games. Three of our NSW athletes finished the Bronze Medal clash in double figures, led by North’s Hunter Goodrick’s 17 points & 10 rebounds, Illawarra’s Brandon Freire’s 16 points & Manly’s Isaiah Lee’s 16 points.
“We had a really good tournament, it was one that we had some really great battles with some really great teams. We had a one point game against Victoria, we had a tough semi final on Day 5 and we have managed to finish with a third place bronze medal which the fact that it’s the boys last opportunity to play together and wear the blue and white it has been a really special thing for them. We knew coming into our last game Tasmania would be awesome and they played a really tough & intense/intelligent game and the fact that we were able to come away with bronze is amazing. I am very pleased with their efforts.”– Michael Cassidy (Head Coach)
