BASKETBALL NSW EXTENDS PARTNERSHIP WITH PCYC NSW

Basketball NSW has announced the extension of its partnership with PCYC NSW which will see the two organisations remain partners through to June 2022.

The extension builds on an existing partnership with additional project deliverables added, where Basketball NSW and the PCYC NSW will work together to deliver both Aussie Hoops (learn to play program) and 3×3 (the largest team urban sport in the world) in PCYC NSW centres where Basketball NSW currently has no or little presence.

Announcing the extension, Basketball NSW Chief Executive Officer Maria Nordstrom stated, “Basketball is enjoying a wave of new excitement and kids are joining our sport more than ever.  We are therefore delighted to announce a new agreement and partnership with PCYC.  The new agreement is focused on expanding the number of Aussie Hoops centres across NSW to provide kids and families with the opportunity to join basketball’s flagship learn to play program Aussie Hoops where we currently don’t have programs or have a need to expand due to local demand.”

“We are happy to be able to provide the community with the broader opportunities to join our sport and believe there are synergies with PCYC in regards to engaging young people to be active and involved in basketball across our state”

PCYC NSW is Australia’s pre-eminent youth organisation working with police and community to empower young people to reach their potential with a primary mission of getting young people active in life.

The PCYC was established in 1937 and operates in 64 sport and recreational locations across NSW and is one of Australia’s leading youth-focused organisations.

“This is a great opportunity for members of PCYC Clubs across the State to be exposed to some of our sports most popular programs. In particular, with 3×3 basketball making its debut at next year’s Olympic Games in Tokyo, I am excited about having and creating more opportunities for people in NSW to play basketball”, said Nordstrom.

Basketball NSW will continue to support PCYC Nations of Origin Tournament by delivering 3×3 basketball competition, 3×3 basketball has featured at 2018 & 2019 Nations of Origins tournaments and has proven to be very popular with the participants.

According to the SportAUS AusPlay report, basketball in Australia is the second-most popular organised team sport, with an estimated 235,000 people playing regularly in NSW.

Dominic Teakle, Chief Executive Officer at PCYC NSW, said basketball is always one of the most popular activities for all ages across PCYC NSW Clubs.

“Basketball is an exciting sport to play and to watch and it’s always well supported by our members,” he said.

“PCYC’s vision is to empower young people to reach their potential. It is through partnerships with national sporting organisations such as Basketball NSW that we provide pathways for young people to go as far as they can in their chosen sport. We are very proud to continue our involvement with this growing sport, in partnership with Basketball NSW.”

Over the coming months, Basketball NSW and PCYC NSW staff will commence working on establishing programs in specific PCYC clubs, with the goal of launching programs in quarter 4.
