BASKETBALL NSW TEAMS UP WITH WHEELCHAIR SPORTS NSW TO DELIVER WHEELCHAIR PROGRAMS

Basketball NSW and Wheelchair Sports NSW are pleased to announce a strategic partnership for the co-delivery of basketball programs in NSW.

The agreement will see both organisations not only align their programs, resources, and calendars as a means to open up the windows of opportunities for people to play wheelchair basketball.

In addition to increasing awareness and exposure of wheelchair basketball, Basketball NSW will now manage the selections of coaches and athletes who will represent NSW at the Kevin Coombs Cup, a tournament which is run by Basketball Australia.

Wheelchair Sports NSW will continue to hold all of the licenses for the NSW based teams that compete in the National Wheelchair Leagues.

As a first for Basketball NSW, in 2020 we will launch the Waratah Wheelchair Basketball League, co-delivered with Wheelchair Sports NSW.  In its first year, the league will be played over 4 x cluster rounds to be held in June and July with the finals played in August. The finer details of the league will be announced over the coming months.

At the community level, Wheelchair Sports NSW will continue to offer its weekly training programs across various locations across the state, (Blacktown, Canberra, Coffs Harbour, Daceyville, Lismore, Newcastle, Shellharbour, Sutherland, Wagga, Wodonga, and Young) these programs are available all year round.

Wheelchair Basketball Club Challenges x 6 will be run from March through to June each year with Wheelchair Basketball Festivals being run in February, September and October.

Basketball NSW CEO Maria Nordstrom said, “Over the past few months, we have been working very closely with Wheelchair Sports NSW, through collaboration and working closely with Mick Garnet and the Board of Wheelchair Sports NSW we hope to create more opportunities for people to play basketball”.
