V A L E – JOHN BURNS
25th January 1935 – 5th August 2016

Well known Goulburn personality John Burns has passed away aged 81 years, after a short illness.
Basketballers would know John as coach of junior teams in Country, State League and State Championships.
John was President and Committee member of the Goulburn Basketball Association and the Barrengarry Conference for many years.

A basketball fanatic, John was an outstanding all-round sportsman – a goal-kicking, try-scoring centre for Goulburn Workers club, who were multi Group Eight winners under English coach Phil Jackson. John was a Goulburn representative cricketer, notable for big six hitting. In the sixties many played Rugby Union on Saturday and lined up for League on the Sunday.

Basketball, golf and water polo were sports that John competed in for many years. Apart from coaching basketball, John, who lived opposite North Park, spent numerous hours coaching cricket and rugby league.

John Burns was well liked and popular with co-workers and associates and respected by the many youths that he coached over many years.

On behalf of the Basketball NSW Board, members and Staff we would like to pass on our condolences to John’s family as well as the many friends and colleagues that have known him over the many years in Goulburn Basketball.

John’s funeral will be held at Saints Peter and Paul’s Old Cathedral, corner Verner Street and Bourke Street, GOULBURN, NSW, 2580 on Wednesday 24th August, 2016 commencing at 11.00am.
