Basketball NSW has continued to create opportunities to play basketball across the Northern Inland and New England region, building on the foundations of the Northern Inland Basketball League (NIBL).

Where it started

NIBL was established in 2022 as a junior development competition, giving players and associations across the region additional opportunities to play and develop closer to home.

As the program evolved, a 3×3 format was introduced in 2024 to provide a more flexible and accessible way to deliver basketball across the region. With smaller teams and fewer requirements for coaches, referees and officials, 3×3 made it easier for regional communities to participate and host events.

Where we are now

In 2026, Basketball NSW has continued to build on NIBL through a greater focus on school-based basketball opportunities across the region.

With the support of Gunnedah Basketball Association and Armidale Basketball Association, Basketball NSW delivers gala days that bring together students from public, Catholic and independent schools to represent their school, play basketball and connect with other schools from across the region.

For high schools, 3×3 Gala Days provide an accessible format for schools of all sizes. With fewer players needed to form a team, the format also gives smaller schools the opportunity to participate and compete.

In 2026, Basketball NSW also introduced modified 5v5 Primary School Gala Days, with a focus on learning the game, participation and enjoyment. The modified format gives younger students the opportunity to develop their skills and understanding of basketball through playing games in a positive and supportive environment.

A starting point for basketball

These gala days are designed to provide a positive introduction to basketball and give students the opportunity to learn the game, represent their school and enjoy playing against schools from across their region.

The Primary School 5v5 and High School 3×3 Gala Days do not progress to a State Final.

Schools looking for further competitive opportunities can participate in Basketball NSW Primary and High School Tournaments held throughout the year across NSW, including in Tamworth, with opportunities for teams to progress to State Championships.
