Basketball should be a safe and fair place for participants.

Here at Basketball NSW, we offer a safe space for people to share their experiences or to raise concerns about behaviour they’ve witnessed or experienced.

If you have information about alleged discrimination or breaches of Basketball Australia’s Member Protection Policy, you can either ;

Please note the Stopline online form is not intended to be used to dispute the standard of officiating in games administered by Basketball NSW (NBL1, Waratah leagues), if your matter is related to this, please send your concerns to [email protected]

Enquiries and complaints about associations

Before You Contact Basketball NSW

Most basketball matters, including competition disputes, registration issues, grading decisions, referee complaints and club disagreements are the responsibility of your local Association, not Basketball NSW. Associations are autonomous organisations that run their own competitions and are required to have a dispute resolution process under their constitution. Please work through the steps below before contacting us.

How the Complaint Process Works

Contact Your Association
Raise your concern directly with your local Association. They have a formal dispute resolution process under their constitution and are the right first point of contact for most basketball matters.

Escalate to BNSW
If your matter involves a breach of the Basketball Australia Member Protection Policy, discrimination, child safety, or a serious integrity concern, or remains unresolved after the Association’s process, contact Basketball NSW.

External Bodies
Some matters may sit outside basketball’s jurisdiction entirely. NSW Fair Trading, NSW Police may be the appropriate avenue depending on the nature of your issue.

Your Association Handles

  • Game-day and competition disputes at local level
  • Player eligibility and registration at local level
  • Grading and competition draws at local level
  • Association/Club fees and registration refunds
  • On-court behaviour and conduct
  • Referee or officiating concerns at local level
  • General Meetings (Annual or Special)

Basketball NSW Handles

  • Breaches of Basketball Australia’s Member Protection Policy
  • Discrimination, harassment or abuse
  • Child safety and safeguarding concerns
  • Serious integrity matters not resolvable locally
  • BNSW-run competition matters (NBL1, Waratah leagues)

What Basketball NSW Cannot Do

  • Overturn an Association’s competition or administrative decisions
  • Intervene in internal disputes where the Association’s own process has not been attempted
  • Act as an appeals body for local competition referee or officiating decisions
  • Investigate alleged theft or criminal conduct — these matters are for NSW Police

If your matter is not resolved through your Association or Basketball NSW, the following external bodies may be able to assist, depending on the nature of the issue.

GOV NSW Fair Trading

NSW Fair Trading can review alleged breaches of the Associations Incorporation Act 2009. Their role is limited to ensuring incorporated associations comply with the Act — they do not have the power to intervene in internal disputes or overturn Association decisions.

Before lodging a complaint with Fair Trading, you must:

  • Have attempted to resolve the matter using the Association’s own dispute resolution procedures
  • Be able to identify which section of the Act was breached
  • Provide clear evidence to support your complaint

Fair Trading cannot:

  • Intervene in internal disputes governed by the Association’s constitution
  • Provide legal advice or interpret the Act or constitution
  • Investigate criminal matters such as alleged theft

POLICE NSW Police

Alleged criminal matters, including theft of association funds, assault, or other criminal conduct are outside the jurisdiction of both Basketball NSW and NSW Fair Trading. These should be reported to NSW Police.

WORK Fair Work Commission

Employment-related matters, including unfair dismissal, workplace bullying, and harassment in a paid role are handled by the Fair Work Commission, not Basketball NSW.
