Basketball NSW in conjunction with the NSW Government are excited to announce that the I AM A GIRL Leadership Scholarship Program is now open for Expressions of Interest. 

The I AM A GIRL Leadership Scholarship Program is proudly supported by the NSW Government and Basketball NSW as part of the 2022 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup legacy program.

The I AM A GIRL Leadership Scholarship Program is offered FREE to selected female players, coaches, referees, statisticians, scoretable officials, team managers, and administrators and includes a 12-month holistic program designed to encourage and inspire women and girls right across NSW.

The I AM A GIRL Leadership Scholarship Program aims to provide additional education and specialised training to develop skills in basketball, teamwork, interpersonal skills, knowledge of the game as a whole and in their area of interest.  

After the program, all participants will be involved in a community project of their choice. They impart their newly gained skills and experiences and inspire the next generation of basketballers to achieve greatness. Ensuring the legacy continues!

Basketball New South Wales, Chief Executive Officer, Maria Norstrom said she is excited to work with the NSW Government in creating more opportunities for females in basketball and support girls that aspire to be involved within the sport.

“The I AM A GIRL Leadership Scholarship Program is one of the first of its kind within basketball as it will cover a number of areas including youth leadership programs looking at the retention of girls in our game, leadership capabilities within our community and encouragement of professional development and basketball programs for women and girls who love to play,” said Nordstrom.

“We are very excited to offer these free scholarships to all females within our community to help build and support growth and development in a number of key areas such as leadership and specialised training.”

→ Media

Each I AM A GIRL Leadership Scholarship holder will take part in a unique experience to their respective area of interest in basketball.

The first intake of the I AM A GIRL program will commence in July 2021 and will conclude in June 2022. The program includes;
→ 6-8 online education sessions.
→ Access to guest speakers from a variety of topics and backgrounds.
→ Belonging to, connecting with, and being a part of an inclusive network of like-minded individuals who are committed to empowering women and girls to achieve.

FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup 2022 – NSW Legacy Program pillars

–   Female Leadership Scholarship Program 
–   Education and participation programs delivered in partnership with Indigenous Basketball Australia and Savannah Pride
–   Delivery of basketball-specific ‘Daughters and Dads’ program
–   Delivery of culturally specific ‘Daughters and Dads’ program delivered in partnership with Savannah Pride
–   School Holiday programs delivered state-wide 
–   3 x 3 Basketball tournaments delivered state-wide

The FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup 2022 is one of the most prestigious competitions in international basketball, featuring the world’s best players from 12 of basketball’s powerhouse nations across Africa, Americas, Asia & Oceania and Europe.

As the host nation, Australia is an automatic qualifier for the event to be held at Sydney Olympic Park from Thursday 22 September to Saturday 1 October 2022. The 2021 Olympic Champions will also receive automatic qualification, whilst the remaining nations will be determined by international qualifying tournaments in February 2022.

The FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup 2022 is supported by the NSW Government through its major events and tourism agency, Destination NSW and the Office of Sport.
