Their story is not one of fame or fortune but of dedication, passion, and an unwavering commitment to the sport they loved. For over three decades, these two individuals had quietly and selflessly shaped the lives of countless young officials and enriched their community through their love for basketball. However, as both take a step back from the game, Basketball NSW would like to formally wish both Trish & Steve Nicholls the best in their retirement from basketball.

The Statistician

Trish Nicholls had been a familiar face in the world of basketball for more than 20 years. Her journey began when she first stepped onto the court as a statistician, meticulously recording every point, rebound, and assist. Little did she know that her role would evolve into something much greater.

As a Statistician, Trish was appointed to officiate at:

  • Sydney Olympic Games
  • Goodwill Games
  • Commonwealth Games
  • Pacific Games in PNG, Samoa & Solomon Islands
  • Several FIBA U17 games
  • Melanesian Cup
  • Women World Championships
  • Asia Cup
  • Over 20 years on the NBL panel
  • Over 20 years on the Basketball Australia National Statistics Panel

Over two decades, Trish has also served as our Stats Coordinator, running numerous courses and conducting 100’s practical assessments and becoming an essential figure in the stats community right across Australia. Trish not only excelled at her craft but also played a pivotal role in developing a new generation of statisticians.

But Trish’s contributions didn’t stop at statistics. She dedicated her time to educating referees, ensuring they understood the game inside and out. She supervised countless events, maintaining the integrity of the sport. Trish’s outstanding commitment extended to her role as a tribunal hearings chair, ensuring that the sport remained fair and just.

“As I move on to the next phase of my life, I want to take a moment to reflect on my basketball journey. It has been a privilege and an honour to be a part of this incredible sport,” expressed Trish Nicholls.

“From mentoring young referee officials in my bright red jacket to participating in some of the world’s greatest basketball events, I’ve had some unforgettable experiences.”

“My love for statistics has allowed me to travel to some exotic island nations, and to meet and work with newfound friends which I’ll always cherish.  On home soil, I have had the opportunity to work with and mentor some of the best statisticians in the world.  I wish them all every success in their basketball careers.”

“I look back with fondness on these years and the fantastic people I’ve had the pleasure of meeting along the way.”

“Thank you all, for being a part of my basketball journey.”

The Referee Mentor

Steve Nicholls, Trish’s partner in both life and basketball, had a different but equally vital role in the sport. As a referee, referee instructor and coach, Steve had shaped the careers of numerous young athletes, instilling in them the values of sportsmanship and fairness. He had become a beacon of knowledge and wisdom on the court, guiding referees with a steady hand and a heart full of passion.

But Steve’s influence extended far beyond the court lines. He served as a board member and president of Hills Basketball, contributing significantly to the design, construction, and opening of the stadium extension.

Steve has also overseen our senior league competitions and managed the scheduling of referees for over 100’s games each year, along with appointing referees to the GPS competition.

“As I bid farewell to on-court refereeing, I can’t help but reminisce about how my love for the game first ignited back in the 60s in England. It’s been an enjoyable journey of over 55 years, filled with unforgettable moments. After moving to Australia, my passion for the game not only led me to enjoy playing but also inspired me to become a referee,” said Steve Nicholls.

“Over the years, I had the privilege of becoming a coach and mentor to upcoming young officials. Witnessing their growth and transformation into outstanding officials has been one of the most rewarding aspects of my journey. To all these talented individuals, I extend my heartfelt wishes for a future filled with continued success and fulfilment in their officiating careers.

“May they continue to flourish and shine brightly in the world of sports officiating.”

Basketball NSW, CEO, Maria Nordstom added that Basketball NSW and the basketball community are extremely proud of both Trish and Steve and would like to further extend a thankyou for all their contributions made to basketball.

“Trish and Steve Nicholls, your unwavering dedication to basketball has been nothing short of extraordinary,” added Nordstrom.

“Your contributions have left an indelible mark on the sport and the lives of countless individuals. As you embark on the next phase of your journey, we extend our heartfelt gratitude and best wishes. Your legacy in basketball will forever be a shining example of passion, commitment, and community spirit.”

“Thank you for your remarkable service.”
