Basketball NSW would like to thank Commonwealth Games NSW (CGNSW) in announcing the 2023 recipients of the CGNSW Athlete Grant Program, which included three young athletes from New South Wales – Jackson McCabe (Byron Bay Beez), Aleira McCowan (Albury Cougars) and Breanna Fisk (Eglinton), who will be awarded $1,000 each.

Jackson and Aleira recently represented NSW Country at the U18 Nationals held in Brisbane, whilst Breanna represented NSW in the Kevin Coombs Cup Wheelchair Nationals Competition.

The athletes, alongside 40 other young athletes from 20 other sports, were nominated by their respective State Sporting Organisations, and many would be aspiring for national selection at the 2026 Commonwealth Games to be held in Regional Victoria.

CGNSW, CEO, Peter Tate said “These young athletes have demonstrated tremendous ability in their respective sport pathways. I have no doubt many will be chosen to represent Australia in future Commonwealth Games”.

A new initiative in 2021 was the introduction of the Alex Fulcher Award – in honour of the former State Division Life Member and President. The inaugural winner in 2021 was Daniel Barber from cycling. The selection panel chooses one of the 40 athletes to receive an additional $1,000.

The CGNSW were delighted to announce the 2023 Alex Fulcher Award winner was Breanna Fisk from Basketball.

CGNSW, President, Michael O’Mara said, “Breanna epitomises all the remarkable qualities that Alex stood for, including determination, humility, fair play and energetic country spirit”.
