Basketball NSW is pleased to share that two NSW athletes have been awarded with a Centre of Excellence Scholarship which commenced in early February 2024.

Flynn Pavely (Manly Warringah Basketball) & James Dyson Merwe (City of Sydney Comets) will each set to embark on their journey into the world of High Performance Basketball.

Both Pavely and Dyson Merwe are poised to kickstart their journey under the CoE scholarship with their start date tipping-off in early February. They will be fully immersed in a rigorous daily training regimen supported by top-tier sports science and high-performance professionals.

Basketball NSW, High Performance General Manager, Brett Coxsedge expressed his anticipation for the promising duo to commence their tenure at the former Australian Institute in Canberra.

“Congratulations to both Flynn & James on their Centre of Excellence Scholarships, both athletes, having emerged from the BNSW State Performance Program, are well-positioned to seamlessly transition into the CoE program in Canberra,” said Coxsedge.

“Basketball NSW has witnessed a significant number of athletes excel at the CoE in recent years, and the addition of these two talented individuals further solidifies our commitment to nurturing elite talent.”

Both athletes have also been selected in the 2024 NSW Metro Under 18 State Team set to play at the Foot Locker National Championships in early April.

Renowned as the pinnacle of junior development in the nation since its inception in 1981, the CoE provides a comprehensive platform for the training of future Boomers and Opals.

The scholarship athletes benefit from exposure to elite service providers and state-of-the-art facilities at the Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra, fostering their holistic development as international-level athletes. They will join their NSW peers, including current scholarship recipients Emmett Adair, Opal Bird, Jade Crook, Josh Dent, and James O’Donnell, at the esteemed Basketball Australia Centre of Excellence.

Moreover, the CoE boasts a remarkable track record of athlete development, with luminaries such as Andrew Bogut, Patty Mills, Lauren Jackson, and Penny Taylor among its distinguished alumni.

The program’s commitment to excellence extends beyond the basketball court, emphasizing education, sports science, and personal development to mold well-rounded athletes poised for success at the highest levels of competition.

Furthermore, the CoE serves as the home to the NBA’s Global Academy, fostering collaboration and competition among the world’s top young basketball talents.

Flynn Pavely and James Dyson Merwe are primed to embark on this transformative journey, representing not only themselves but also the rich basketball heritage of New South Wales on the national stage.

Congratulations to both athletes.
